The statistic in the survey that made the biggest impression on me was the fact that 78% of teenage boys said adults had a higher opinion of teenage girls than boys. I grew up in a family of four sisters and attended an all-girls school, while for the last 20 years or so I've lived in an all male household with my husband, sons and a male lodger for a while (although we did have a female snake for a few years!) From my experience teenage boys are far more straight-forward and less complicated…

I want Caris to help girls connect with God in their life as a teenager: to get his perspective on how loved they are, understand that life has a purpose, be inspired that they can make a difference, and understand that in God there’s hope for healing from emotional hurts. Through doing Caris I’ve also realised how important it is for Christian girls to realise that there are others out there who also love God. There’s so much peer pressure. It’s such a hard time in life to stand out from the cr…

Kate Adams, senior lecturer at the Anglican Bishop Grosseteste University College, in Lincoln, said failure to attend to young children’s spiritual needs could leave them feeling “misunderstood” and force many to “retreat into silence". It comes despite the fact that growing numbers of faith schools being opened across the UK and standards of religious education lessons are improved. More students are also opting to take A-levels in religious studies.
But Dr Adams found that young children were…

As Christian youth workers it is important that we understand issues of self-esteem as it can affect how our young people grow and develop, respond to and grow with God and participate in our youth work. It is particularly important that we delve behind the ‘pop culture’ definitions, explanations and response to the self-esteem issue – we need to have a healthy biblical understanding of self-esteem rather than a magazine-based set of tools to ‘solve the problem’.…

Stats from the DCSF last month showed how many children had reached early learning goals as a baseline before the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage from September 2008, and revealed a gender gap with girls outperforming boys. One in four boys couldn't write their own name compared with 15% of girls, and one in five couldn't count to ten. Girls were also found to be more creative than boys, whereas boys had a slightly better 'knowledge and understanding of the world' with 54% abl…

We have aimed to eliminate from our results all activities that are
an integral part of practising religion.
86% of churches provide activities for children, young people and
families in the community. Given that there are around 37,500
churches in England, this suggests a possible 32,000 churches
working across England to provide services in this context.
There is a substantial volunteer workforce involved, in addition to
the paid workforce, with volunteers providing an average of 38
hours pe…

How do you structure a programme for your group if many of the children are erratic attenders?
A sequenced curriculum has been the traditional way to ensure that children work their way through all the Bible stories and teaching appropriate for their age. But this presumes that children come regularly.
What about children who only come along to your groups once or twice a month? Can we put together programmes that still give them an understanding of the 'big God story' and the way that the Bib…

Or teachers, with the awesome responsibility and privilege of working with children and young people, seeing them grow into a relationship with God, and witnessing their incredible journey of faith?

Engaging children in basic conversation could be up to six times more effective than reading to them, US health experts believe.
Even if the baby or toddler cannot form words, their primitive responses to a conversation helps develop their language skills, they said. What the study calls “adult monologueing” - in other words, grown ups talking at children - had a “weak” impact on language development, said the study.
Letting babies watch television has virtually no impact, good or bad, on this…

As some parents erase every difficulty, their children never enter the school of hard knocks. As the psychologist Prof Martin Seligman, author of The Optimistic Child, points out, "Children need to fail… If we leap in to bolster self-esteem to soften the blows… we make it harder for them to achieve mastery."
But the problems of the cosseted middle classes pale in comparison to the children struggling with poverty and deprivation. Often prematurely branded as failures by the education system, ma…
