Figures released by the Church of England this week reveal a drop of 9,000 in the number of children and young people attending church each week. The statistics show 219,000 under-16s in regular attendance in 2007, while in 2006 the figure was 228,000. Records for 2005 put the number at 232,000. The Revd Janina Ainsworth, Chief Education officer for the Church of England, said the figures showed ‘only a small part of the Church’s overall engagement with youth’. There were links with young people…

Throughout the pages of the Christian holy texts, children are repeatedly welcomed into the faith community as essential members of God’s family. From the words of the Torah to Paul’s letters, children and young people are seen as vital members of the community of faith. The words and sto-ries of the Bible demonstrate the inescapable truth that “the church is fully the church—the people of God—only when children are present” and welcome.…

I travel to many churches as a guest speaker or trainer and am very often stunned by how little need there is for Bibles in most children’s ministries. I consider teaching with and out of a Bible to be the FUNDAMENTAL BASIS of my teaching. I use puppets, object lessons, media clips, illusions and you-name-it, I’ve used it, to creatively teach and engage children, but never as a replacement or substitute for teaching with and out of a Bible. ONLY THE BIBLE HAS GOD’S PROMISE OF EFFECTIVENESS. And…

A new magazine called Caris came out just before Easter. It is aimed at 11-16 year olds but from scanning the online pilot copy it seems like it would be more suitable for the 8-12 age (though it depends on your kids!). It has some interesting articles on ethical issues, fashion pages featuring some funky fairtrade organicy clothes, celebs, real life stories and a few more faith focused sections . If this might be useful for you as a resource or to give/sell to your kids check out the website at…

It's easier than you think, says child-friendly educator Karyn Henley.
Interview by Ron R. Lee
We all want to make God's love and care real to our kids, but it can be a challenge. We sit Jimmy down to hear a Bible lesson only to find that he's more interested in poking his brother and tipping his chair back on two legs—before falling over. Even when no stitches are required, it's frustrating.
Many of us feel we're not doing that great a job at the most important task facing Christian parents.…

Your Bible story is like an orange. You can hand it off to a kid and expect him to tear into it and eat it. Or you can peel it yourself and hand the slices to the kid. It is easier for the kid to eat if you hand it to him in bite-sized, pieces that are already peeled. Bible stories are easier for kids to understand and apply if you break them down and serve them in small parts.
“How do I peel apart a Bible story to get out of it something I can teach kids.” This is not the same as explaining ho…
