Dave Roberts Are your child protection policies up to date?

You will probably have heard that the government is rolling out its new Vetting and Barring Scheme from 12 October 2009. The scheme is intended to provide extra protection for children and vulnerable adults. It does not replace the CRB checks, with which we are familiar, but complements them by aiming to ensure that no unsuitable person works with children and vulnerable adults. The scheme is being implemented in stages with the main changes taking place next year. However, amongst other change… Continue

The Church in Wales has launched a major review into past allegations of child abuse in a bid to protect young people in its midst. Bishops in the Church commissioned the review to look specifically at past allegations or suspicions of child abuse which predate the Church’s Child Protection Policy. Dave Roberts Date set for child protection changes

All employers must send their referrals for List 99 and the Protection of Children Act list - which record the names of people banned from working with children - to the ISA rather than the Department for Children, Schools and Families and Department of Health from this date. An ISA spokesman said: "This should not cause any disruption for employers. It will hopefully mean minimal change with the main difference being that referrals are sent to a different place." But as CYP Now was going to p… Continue

The Churches’ Child Protection Advisory Service is to reach non-English speaking faith communities in the UK with a new Government-funded DVD to help them develop an effective child safety strategy. Dave Roberts CRB checks hinder young volunteers

Government efforts to increase the number of young people volunteering are being hampered by Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks, according to professionals. The problem is acute for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may struggle to find the information needed for the checks. Lee McDaid, mentoring project manager for the South East London to South Africa scheme, said: "If the government wants to increase the number of young volunteers, they need to resolve this issue." The gover… Continue

Dave Roberts Smacking - Where does the church stand?

Here is thought starter that examines some of the issues Picture the scene in your local supermarket. Imagine a young child. What is happening? How are the child’s parents responding? How are other adults reacting? If the child was being delightful then perhaps no one noticed. If the child was fractious then maybe someone caught the child’s eye and winked or spoke sympathetically to the parent. Someone else may have tutted and muttered ‘What that child needs is a good smack’. – Isn’t it… Continue

Dave Roberts Churches examine smacking from within non violence tradition

The Churches’ Network for Non-violence (CNNV) has developed out of concern that physical punishment of children has been largely unchallenged by Christian and other religious communities. CNNV rejects all forms of violence against children including corporal punishment in all its forms. We believe positive, non-violent discipline best models the example set by Jesus. All the recorded encounters between Jesus and children were gentle, respectful and compassionate. They believe all children shoul… Continue

Dave Roberts Concern grows in US over sexual abusers in Church

Sexual abuse is not limited to any racial, ethnic, or socio-economic class. It is no respecter of any religious denomination or creed. Sexual abuse can happen anywhere. Parents allow their children to participate in ministry programs for the positive experience of Christian growth, fellowship, and spiritual mentoring. Obviously, this positive experience is shattered if a child is sexually abused while participating. Sexual abuse should never happen in ministry, but the church and Christian mini… Continue

Dave Roberts Policing Innocence - CCPAS Question Its Conclusions

A hard hitting book about paedophilia in the religious context, Policing Innocence, is attracting controversy. Cited as a helpful insight into some stark realities here on Children Matter, it has earned a strong rebuke from CCPAS, the leading child protection educators for failing to highlight the extensive work done by many churches to protect their children. The CCPAS responsed as follows: We have been appContinue
