Dave Roberts Twilight Saga: New Moon is ‘moral vacuum’, says Catholic leader

The latest instalment in the vampire movie series Twilight is a “deviant moral vacuum”, according to the Vatican. In New Moon, British actor Robert Pattinson returns as the blood-sucking vampire Edward Cullence in love with the beautiful Bella Swan. The movie has already broken box office records as the highest single-day earner after pulling in $62.2 million on its opening day. Monsignor Franco Perazzelo, of the pontifical council of culture, said on Friday that the theme of vampires in Twilig… Continue

Dave Roberts Making sense of The Twilight Saga

Blythe Toll offers her critique of the Twilight Saga, a series of books that have captivated the hearts and minds of teens and adults, female and male alike. She picks out some themes that resonate with Christian theology and highlights points to discuss with young people. I have a confession to make. I have read all four of the Twilight Saga books and seen the first movie twice. But I have another confession to make; I don’t like Twilight. I apologise to all those fans out there but sci… Continue

Dave Roberts The Child and the Church - What Son of Rambow said

Below is the synopsis of a 2007 film that examined in part the life of a child living in a religious household. Have any of you seen it and can you comment on how the the faith of the family was portrayed? SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early 80's, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up. We see the story through the eyes of W… Continue

Dave Roberts Fox takes up next Narnia film after Disney drop-out

With Walt Disney Pictures no longer on board to help launch the third movie instalment of the “Chronicles of Narnia”, 20th Century Fox has reportedly stepped in to partner with Walden Media for the next title in the Christian-themed fantasy series. As first reported by Variety magazine, Fox and Walden plan to split production and marketing costs for "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", which is projected to go into production on a $140 million budget. Though the two companies are still working out… Continue

Dave Roberts The Secret Life of Bees

Although the movie touches on spirituality, it is not a Christian movie – the Boatwrights worship and pray to a wooden black Madonna statue. Yet, the film still wonderfully draws out some heavyweight themes that will resonate well with Christians, such as the search for forgiveness and belonging, loving and being loved, and the chance to start all over again regardless of what has come before. The contrast between T Ray and Lily is a particularly interesting one and reflects the choices that we… Continue

Dave Roberts The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

One of the most moving films of the year, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a powerful, haunting story about the horrors of the Holocaust. Unlike the vast majority of such stories, however, it doesn’t allow the audience to view events through the eyes of a Jewish character. Instead, we… Continue

Dave Roberts Dark Knight Reviewed

The bottom line (at the top) is this is an excellent movie that your kids should NOT see. However, if they do see it, don’t miss the opportunity to talk about some of the issues this movie raises. On the surface, this is a basic, crazed-maniac- wants-to-kill-and-destroy-and-hero-has- to-stop-them kind of plot. However, there are some deeper themes that are addressed in this movie that make it stand out as a great movie. Concerns The biggest concern for this movie is violence. Although that is… Continue

Dave Roberts Wall E - The new Pixar movie

I love this quote from WALL-E's director, Andrew Stanton, who told Christianity Today, "They tell you that as a storyteller, it's vital to just stick with and be honest with your values system. The last thing I want to do is go to a movie and feel like I'm being preached… Continue

Dave Roberts Vatican condemns Golden Compass as cold and hopeless

The Vatican on Wednesday condemned the US film "The Golden Compass", which some have called anti-Christian, saying it promotes a cold and hopeless world without God. In a long editorial, the Vatican newspaper l'Osservatore Romano, also slammed Philip Pullman, the bestselling British author of the book on which the family fantasy movie is based.

It was the Vatican's most stinging broadside against an author and a film since it roundly condemned "The Da Vinci Code" in 2005 and 2006. "In P… Continue

Dave Roberts Arming Parents with Truth

Arming Parents

When a movie like “The Golden Compass” comes out it always reminds me of the importance of arming the parents and children of our ministries with the Biblical knowledge to make the right choices. Our best defense is offense; teaching and equipping parents children Biblical truth BEFORE an issue surfaces, and prepare them to deal with the challenges they might face.

One of our challenges as children’s leaders is providing

Dave Roberts The Christianity Today Review of The Golden Compass

And so we come to the film's treatment of religion. Serafina says the coming war—which, in the second and third books, is revealed to be a war against the Judeo-Christian God—will bring an end to "destiny" and establish a new era of "free will." What that means exactly is not spelled out, not in this movie, but we can get a sense of it from the fact that nearly all of this film's villains work for the church-like Magisterium, which spends much of its time "telling people what

Dave Roberts Leave Our Kids Alone!

Readers say they're concerned about The Golden Compass because they fear the movie is targeting their kids—and trying to lure children into atheism. In a recent CT at the Movies newsletter, we noted that last year, many Christians embraced The Da Vinci Code—a film full of heresy and blasphemy—as a "witnessing tool" and an "opportunity" to engage culture.

But now, a little more than two weeks away from the release of The Golden Compass, many Christians are responding differently. The f… Continue

Dave Roberts Evangelical newspaper urges parents to watch Pullman with children

A film called The Golden Compass falls within the genre of children’s fantasy.

The movie is based upon the award-winning trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials, by Phillip Pulman. Pulman is a militant atheist who is said to despise C.S. Lewis and the famous Chronicles of Narnia. His motivation in writing his books was specifically to counteract the Christian influence of Lewis’s work on children. In 2003 Pulman gave an interview in which he said that ‘my books are a

Dave Roberts Church of Scotland wary of Pullman boycott

The Church of Scotland is going against the tide of opposition to the soon-to-be-released movie The Golden Compass, by rejecting calls for its boycott and saying it is instead "looking forward to a major cinematic event this winter".

The Golden Compass is the film adaptation of the first book in British author Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” fantasy trilogy, published in the UK under the title “Northern Lights”, and is due for release across the UK on 5 December.

Dave Roberts Responding to 'His Dark Materials'

I just wanted to warn all Christian parents to avoid the upcoming movie
"The Golden Compass" put out by New Line Cinema and Scholastic
entertainment. It is due out in December. It looks like a fun movie! But
this is the first movie based on the trilogy of books titled "His Dark materials." The author of the books, Philip Pullman is a militant
atheist whose professed purpose with these books is to turn kids away from Christianity. He has said this outright. The first movie has

Dave Roberts Simpsons pushing the envelope

After more than 20 years of TV episodes, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening finally decided the time was right to put Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and the rest of the town of Springfield onto the big screen via The Simpsons Movie. The result? A movie that parents will probably take kids to and be quite shocked at just how far the writers were willing to push the envelope.
