Dave Roberts What do you say to an eight-year-old girl?

You meet a friend with her eight-year-old daughter when you're out shopping, or at church, or over at her house for lunch. You don't know the little girl very well, so what's the first thing you say to her? I had a very interesting conversation with Mark Green at LICC the other day, and he observed that adults tend, in that context, to comment on the girl's appearance: 'You look very pretty today,' or 'That's a lovely dress'. And if that's the only thing we commend them for, or always the first… Continue

Dave Roberts Do adults have more positive view of teenage girls?

The statistic in the survey that made the biggest impression on me was the fact that 78% of teenage boys said adults had a higher opinion of teenage girls than boys. I grew up in a family of four sisters and attended an all-girls school, while for the last 20 years or so I've lived in an all male household with my husband, sons and a male lodger for a while (although we did have a female snake for a few years!) From my experience teenage boys are far more straight-forward and less complicatedContinue

Dave Roberts Angel sightings by children 'should not be dismissed'

Kate Adams, senior lecturer at the Anglican Bishop Grosseteste University College, in Lincoln, said failure to attend to young children’s spiritual needs could leave them feeling “misunderstood” and force many to “retreat into silence". It comes despite the fact that growing numbers of faith schools being opened across the UK and standards of religious education lessons are improved. More students are also opting to take A-levels in religious studies. But Dr Adams found that young children were… Continue

Dave Roberts 4-14 Window is a Mission Priority

Luis Bush, international facilitator of Transform World Connections, coined the term "10/40" two decades ago to refer to regions of the eastern hemisphere located between 10 and 40 degrees north of the equator - home to largest population of non-Christians in the world. While the 10/40 paradigm refers to a geographical area, the 4/14 Window concerns itself with children and youth between the ages of four and 14 who are growing up outside of the church. “There is a recognition that we are losin… Continue

Dave Roberts Self esteem and young people - biblical understanding?

As Christian youth workers it is important that we understand issues of self-esteem as it can affect how our young people grow and develop, respond to and grow with God and participate in our youth work. It is particularly important that we delve behind the ‘pop culture’ definitions, explanations and response to the self-esteem issue – we need to have a healthy biblical understanding of self-esteem rather than a magazine-based set of tools to ‘solve the problem’.… Continue

Dave Roberts Good Leaflets - What would you recommend?

As part of our bus ministry, we would like to have leaflets available for YOUNG PEOPLE to take away with them that would have a strong Christian ethos (not necessarily “Christian”). Leaflets would be on bullying, sexual health, alcohol, drugs, parental separation to name a few. Would you be able to help us find a supplier? I have tried doing a Google search, but with little success so far. I would appreciate any help you could offer. Should you wish to find out more about our project you can

Dave Roberts Does Gender Effect How Children Learn

Stats from the DCSF last month showed how many children had reached early learning goals as a baseline before the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage from September 2008, and revealed a gender gap with girls outperforming boys. One in four boys couldn't write their own name compared with 15% of girls, and one in five couldn't count to ten. Girls were also found to be more creative than boys, whereas boys had a slightly better 'knowledge and understanding of the world' with 54% abl… Continue

Dave Roberts 86% of churches work with children in the community

We have aimed to eliminate from our results all activities that are an integral part of practising religion. 86% of churches provide activities for children, young people and families in the community. Given that there are around 37,500 churches in England, this suggests a possible 32,000 churches working across England to provide services in this context. There is a substantial volunteer workforce involved, in addition to the paid workforce, with volunteers providing an average of 38 hours pe… Continue

Dave Roberts Duet 6 - always has been the best way to help children learn

Engaging children in basic conversation could be up to six times more effective than reading to them, US health experts believe. Even if the baby or toddler cannot form words, their primitive responses to a conversation helps develop their language skills, they said. What the study calls “adult monologueing” - in other words, grown ups talking at children - had a “weak” impact on language development, said the study. Letting babies watch television has virtually no impact, good or bad, on this… Continue
