i have just come across the 'My First Message' bible. by Eugene Peterson

it's brilliant!

the pages pictures and graphics are lush, the text is easy to read with a flowing style (as you expect from the message). no only that but thought prompting questions are found though out as well as suggested prayers and activities to coincide with the events.

basicly i highly recomend it since it combines everything that children need and enjoy.

It is total quality and a step up from "The Hands on Bible" which was published a few years ago by Nelson

I am not so fond of the book, I think the message paraphrase uses abstract metaphors which young children find hard to grasp, there are also lots of Americanisms in the Message which many children will need explained, and then of course many older children who would benefit from the language in this bible wouldnt want to be seen with a picture book! : ) Occassionally will use a verse from the Message if it communicates the most clearly to all children a message. I love Hands on Bible because it is a translation rather than a paraphrase, and this Message picture bible is not comprehensive of all scripture.

A colleague used it with his 7 year old - and she loved it. He found the fact that the language was rather more adult than you might expect meant that lots of conversations took place between them over meanings etc.

The Hands on Bible is good, but there is more of a "feel" (can't quite explain that) to the Message for Kids. The Hands on Bible is a little bit linear in terms of how scripture can be applied to life . . . I find the Message more open and accessable, it is an ideal gift, especially for children new to church.
