hiya, I bought a book this week looked at the cover and thought oh I know someone called dave gidney how funny! It was only when i started reading it that I relized that meant you wrote it! Thats what the name on the frount of a book mean! (I did know that!)
Yes, I have met up with Helen Jones, thank you for suggesting it. We have met in several different situations - children's workers' retreat, church weekends and she is done some clubs for our sister church. God bless Steve
no didn't read the book - did read some reviews though - seems pretty run of the mill ish in terms of its focus (treats people like objects to be 'saved' - doesn't really have a well thought out theology of people, so is not very human friendly in its approach - seems to be a lot of that stuff about right now) - i was trained for 'handling children's behaviour' and 'handling teenage behaviour' (future childcare training limited - parents guide by graham finch/national children's homes) as well as for 'positive parenting' - all great stuff which has really helped with running support groups for parents of children and young people (many in a social work/education/community education setting) - i also use a very solution focussed (brief therapy) approach which i was trained for a while back - i have adapted the materials each time to suit each group and the context - as a core, the handling children/teenage behaviour is initially a ten session support group (with materials), but i have found that most of those groups follow the pattern of individuals making a positive plan for change and then just naturally go on to make another and another - seems like a pretty sustainable and organic model because they are completely in control of where it will go - other material i use a lot to supplement the course is :
the five love languages of children - dvd and book - Dr Gary Chapman and Dr Ross Campbell
boundaries with kids - book and workbook - Henry Cloud and John Townsend
friends for life programme - Dr Paula Barrett (www.pathwayshrc.com.au)
the good , the bad and the irritating - Dr Nigel Mellor
even better parents - video and trainers' resource pack by barbara maines and george robinson (lucky duck publishing)
developing parenting skills, confidence and self esteem with cd rom - barbara quartey and tina rae (sage publications/paul chapman)
masses of stuff on developing emotional literacy in adults and children from the school of emotional literacy in edinburgh
small groupwork stuff from pipwilson.com including all the blob tree conversation starters and lots of pip's old rolling magazine games etc
solution focussed brief therapy stuff from psych services
hope some of that is helpful - this turned into a bit of a long comment !!
Hi Dave I noticed that you said you do apprentice based children's work training. Do you know of a network or organization that puts people interested in that sort of training in contact with people or churches like yourself?
well ... we do ... We take students from all over the country, place them with a church here in the midlands, alongside an experienced childrens worker, find them accommodation there, and then train them in childrens work and biblical studies too.
Does that sound like the sort of thing you are thinking of ?
You are right, its being the midst of good children's work surrounded by good leaders that will inspire and develop young leaders. Its just good to find out what is going on out there.
